IFLA is pleased to announce that it has become a signatory to the Declaration on the inclusion of culture in the Post-2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Declaration highlights the importance of culture within the post2015 Development Agenda. Culture was absent from the Millennium Development adopted by the United Nations in 2000 and the Declaration now seeks to rectify this.

IFLA strongly believes in culture as an essential part of development. As reflected in many aspects of IFLA’s work, we believe that societies need their culture and heritage in order to develop to their upmost potential. We call on world leaders to recognize that culture has a defining impact on societies and needs to be supported and furthered in order to guarantee sustainable development.

The Declaration: 

  • stresses that culture is both a driver and enabler of sustainable development and that the explicit inclusion of targets and indicators for culture in the Sustainable Development Goals will enable transformative change.
  • commits to work together and with international, regional, national and local partners to achieve development policies and strategies that recognize and integrate effectively with the cultural dimensions of development.
