IFLA is an extraordinary networking resource for libraries worldwide. From the moment I met the members of this organization at the 2005 pre-conference in São Paulo, it was love at first sight and I decided to become actively involved. I share IFLA’s values: access to knowledge for all, freedom of speech and intellectual property rights. I also value sharing and openness, two other factors contributing to the success of all initiatives put forward by IFLA, an organization of which I am proud to be a part and that I wish to continue serving.
My involvement in IFLA began in 2005. Since then, I have attended all of the Annual Congresses and several mid-year meetings of the Public Library and Metropolitan Libraries Sections. In 2006, I was elected member of the Public Library Section Standing Committee. Four years later, starting my second term, I became chair of this section. During this period, the Public Library Section presented sessions at every Congress. Realizing that other sections shared several similar issues and that sharing knowledge allows for joint growth, we also worked together with other sections on several occasions.
In 2008, I acted as member of the Organizing Committee for the Annual Congress in Québec City. As part of the event, I organized a satellite conference in Montréal in order to give many francophone professionals the opportunity to experience an IFLA event.
My greatest strength is undoubtedly my ability to form networks, to allow various stakeholders to meet and initiate change. I am also considered to have political acumen, a skill that I developed over the course of my nine years as President of the Association des bibliothèques publiques du Québec.
Among the issues that I care about, I believe that the aging of the population will have several ramifications. We cannot ignore its impact on future professional resources and on our patrons. Moreover, in a world where virtual resources are quickly shattering walls and borders, the sharing of knowledge is essential – indeed, vital. IFLA’s reputation fosters dialogue and collaboration. Through the creation of committees of experts and professionals from all backgrounds and environments, it allows for the development of guidelines that will enable us to face future issues. For instance, IFLA plays an important role in establishing international standards regarding cataloging and digital matters.
I hold these issues and opportunities as fundamental, and that is why I am asking for your support for a position on IFLA’s Governing Board.
