The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) Knowledge Resource Centre in collaboration with International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Asia & Oceania organised a webinar on ‘Information literacy: Knowing the right news in the digital age” on 8 May 2020. The panel of experts included Dr Sanjay Bihani, Member, IFLA Governing Board, Prof Michael Seadle, Professor, Humboldt University of Berlin, Dr P N Vasanti, Director General, Centre for Media Studies and Prof Gurujit Singh, Professor, Faculty of Law, IP University. The webinar session was moderated by Dr Shantanu Ganguly, Fellow TERI. The distinguished panel of speakers discussed discussed about misinformation, disinformation and fake news. They also addressed various measures to combat false news, reliability check on the source of information social media and other communication platforms.

The major focus of the webinar session was:

  • What is the difference between misinformation and disinformation?
  • What misinformation is spreading? How it spreads?
  • What impact it creates on humans and society?
  • How to choose authentic and reliable information?

The speakers elaborated on how information users can defend themselves against fake news, the information source that are reliable and how to adopt a  balanced approach to digital media consumption for news requirements.

There was an overwhelming response of more than 2600 registration from 31 countries for the webinar session. A total of 1355 participants from across the globe participated in the session.

A livestreaming of the Webinar session was simultaneously featured on TERI YouTube channel. It received more than 6000 views.
